Off-road
Where the road ends, your own power supply begins.
There are no campsites and no sockets off-road. The system has to be robust, chargeable and matched to the car.
The biggest risk is not running out of power but having no way to put it back. Off-road, charging on the move and solar together are what give you the margin.
CampOFF
This is how we would do it
Off-road the question is what happens if you do not reach tarmac for three days.
Our plan for that is dual charging: the DC-DC would charge from the daily movement, solar from the afternoons spent parked. Neither is enough on its own; together you would not have to ration power.
We would spend more time on securing things than you would first think. Anything not properly strapped down starts moving off-road — and a 20 kg power station in the boot is not what you want to see fly.
What to watch for off-road
- Independent power: the fridge and the lighting must not run off the car's starter battery.
- Charging on the move: a DC-DC charger from the car's alternator, because off-road you move a lot.
- Solar: for the days you stay put and for longer camps.
- Compressor fridge: it takes the vibration; ice packs are not an option.
- Rooftop tent: no need to hunt for flat, clean ground.
- Proper mounting and cabling: off-road, what matters is that nothing in the boot can start moving.
