Power station

The question is not which is biggest. It is how much your own devices need.

The power station is the heart of the system: the fridge, the laptop, the phones and the lighting all run off it. A well-sized smaller unit is worth more than an oversized one you leave at home.

CampOFF

Why it is part of the system

On the first trip we still thought a big power bank would do. A single compressor fridge asks for more in a day than our whole kit could deliver — that is where this started.

The power station became the centre of the system because the cooling, the laptop, the phones and the lighting all have to run off the same thing. And its display gives you what was missing before: you do not have to guess.

Our first units have just arrived and field measurement starts now. What we already know: it is not worth starting with the biggest. A well-sized mid-range unit you actually take with you beats a large one that stays in the garage.

What is it for?

It supplies 230 V and USB without mains power: for a fridge, a laptop, a router, lighting and smaller kitchen devices. At home during a blackout it bridges the loads that matter most.

Who is it for?

It suits you if you do not want to sit by candlelight while camping, off-road, on a road trip or in a blackout at home — and do not want a petrol generator next to your tent.

How to choose

  • Capacity (Wh): this decides how long it lasts. Daily consumption × number of days, plus roughly 20% reserve.
  • AC output (W): this decides what you can start. A kettle and an induction hob are the bottleneck, not the fridge.
  • Solar input: if you plan days without driving, this decides how much you can put back.
  • Mains charging: how long a full recharge takes when there is a socket.
  • Expandability: if you need more later, an expansion battery is cheaper than a second complete unit.
